Castle History
Like the Tower of London, the Castle of Edinburgh consists of dozens of buildings, some of them relatively young (the "new" guardhouse was build in 1888), and others positively ancient (St. Margaret's Chapel, the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, dates from the early 12th century, and the Royal Palace and impressive Great Hall were built in the 16th century). We see Scotland's version of the crown jewels, include the Stone of Destiny, which is placed beneath the Coronation Chair when a new monarch of the United Kingdom is being crowned.
