St. Martin in the Fields
St. Martin in the Fields
Near Trafalgar Square sits St. Martin in the Fields, a beautiful church famous for its music concerts. It was built in 1222, and rebuilt by Henry the VIII in 1542 (when it was literally "in the fields" between the cities of London and Westminster), although it contains graves from the Roman era. We tour the crypt (well-preserved, now a popular cafe) and the surrounding grounds, before taking in a free lunchtime Handel concert in the sanctuary (Violin Sonata in D Op. 1 No. 13, performed by Sean Riley and Nathan Tinker).
