Auchindoun Castle

Next, we try to find Auchindoun Castle.  It was build in the mid-15th century, although prehistoric (Pictish) pottery has been found at the site.  It was briefly run by the Ogilvy clan (relatives of Olivia?), and was derelict by 1725; stones from it were used to build Balvenie Castle.  It was too damaged to safely visit until recently.

We find a sign for Auchindoun, park the car on the side of the road, and hike up a steep hill through a sheep meadow.  Finally, we see the castle, still far in the distance.  A rancher drives by and tells us he thinks it's a lovely day to walk to the castle.  But the sun is setting and the hiking is slow-going (the paths are muddy after the wettest April in recorded history).  Besides, Scottish goblins known as Redcaps live in castle ruins; they are said to murder travelers who stray into their homes and dye their hats with their victims' blood (who then have to work as luggage porters for Amtrak, in some versions of the tale).  Rather than risk it, we content ourselves with pics from afar and hike back to the road.
