St. Giles Cathedral
St. Giles Cathedral
Next we tour St Giles' Cathedral, which has a huge ornate spire. St Giles was a 7th century hermit who lived in France, and is the patron of both this town and this church. St. Giles is also known as the Mother Church of Presbyterianism: the National Covenant, the agreement legitimizing the Scottish Reformation and keeping the Church of England out of Scotland, was signed here. A church has been on this site since 854; the center of the current church was built in 1385, with additional chapels being added over the centuries.
