Earl's Court Tavern
Earl's Court Tavern
We have lunch at the Earl's Court Tavern- Greg has curry (excellent) and Olivia has steak pie (also very good). It's our first British bar, and navigating the customs takes some quick reading in our tourist book.
Primer: you order everything at the bar; food is delivered to your table; tipping is not customary; offering to buy the bartender a drink is polite.
It is also our first run-in with the tied house system, whereby a single brewing company owns hundreds of pubs and taverns, and serves exclusively their own beer in them. Earl's Court Tavern is owned by Taylor Walker, one of the biggest- they own 108 pubs in Great Britain, about 80 of them in London. They all serve some very good real ale- Young's and Spitfire among them- as well as good traditional pub food. They all also have free WIFI, which is nice. But we do get tired of the same offerings (and the same decor) in pub after pub.
